Banco de México presented the “Report on Regional Economies / January-March 2021”, which addresses information on the different regions of Mexico in three aspects: the evolution of economic activity, inflation and expectations of economic agents.

The section “Perspectives on Regional Economies” presents the perspectives of business executives on economic activity and price behavior in Mexico's regions, as well as the risks that in their opinion could affect regional economic growth in the coming months.

The information analyzed on the outlook comes from two sources: the first is the Monthly Survey of Regional Economic Activity (EMAER), conducted by Banco de México among companies in the manufacturing and non-manufacturing sectors, and the second is the interviews conducted by Banco de México between April 5-29, 2021, to business executives from different economic sectors in each of the Mexican regions.

The document details that with respect to fixed asset investment expectations for the following 12 months, the interviews conducted with business executives suggest that such expectations continued to improve in all regions, except for the north-central region of Mexico.

The report details that those executives consulted who indicated plans to make some type of investment in the next 12 months most frequently indicated the acquisition of:

  • Machinery and equipment for manufacturing
  • Real estate
  • Transportation equipment

On the other hand, the report refers that, in contrast, business executives who anticipated a reduction in their investment mentioned a greater number of occasions that they expect a decrease in the purchase of real estate, furniture and office equipment, as well as computer equipment and peripherals.

“The executives interviewed also gave their opinion on the main external and internal factors that could contribute to a recovery of regional activity during the next twelve months in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic,” the report states.

In manufacturing, there is a favorable outlook for exports to the United States of telecommunications and medical equipment, wood products for construction, auto parts and pick-up trucks.
